When the Words We Use Hurt Someone Else-Insults

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Rosemary Horner WHAT IS AN INSULT? According to.www.wikapedia.com- an insult is a statement or action, which affronts or demeans someone. An insult may be intentional or accidental. An example of the latter is a well-intended simple explanation, which in fact is superfluous, but is given due to underestimating intelligence or knowledge of the other. IN OTHER WORDS, INSULTS HURT!!! As much as they hurt there are loads of resources on the World Wide Web that give you instructions on how to create and deliver insults. I am not providing them here because it is an insult to encourage this kind of verbal abuse. I am not a psychologist but every time I witness someone casting an insult I am watching a person who has been hurt himself or herself. They are often striking back. I have been a victim as well as victimizer at some points in my life. Sometimes folks just dont want to or too tired to find another way of speaking to someone. When there is disappointment in a mates behavior the person may, instead of pointing out the behavior, attempt to attack the person. Recently someone shared with me this insult. Your are a poor excuse for a man. This was said by a woman feeling frustrated with her husbands recent behavior. I am sure he had a comeback like, You are just like your mother Ouch! IS THERE EVER ANY TRUTH? Insults often have some truth in them, thats why they hurt so much. For example, there was a woman who shared her insecurity about the size of her thighs with her husband during a revealing and trusting moment. Days later, when he was angry at her threat to leave the relationship, he lashed out in a loud voice, Thats right run away, THUNDER THIGHS! SNEAKY INSULTS The most dangerous kind of insults is the sneaky ones. Those are insults that are disguised by good body language and tone of voice.Imagine the seemingly happy couple in a public place. He looks at her, smiles and in a surgery laced voice insults her. He uses information only the two of them know about and cut her in shreds. Yet, for all appearance sake no one can ever say they witnessed a deadly form of verbal abuse. The bottom line is your manager, friend or family member can have a smile on their face while stabbing you in the chest! Insults are a common form of verbal abuse that makes us angry and often wounded for life. Speaking of Speaking in Tongues

Monday, November 26th, 2007

By Michael Tummillo A young bible college student once wrote and told me how the college she attends has been teaching that “speaking in tongues” is the sole evidence that one is filled with the Spirit and that no one WAS filled with the Spirit UNLESS they’ve spoken in tongues. Apparently, that didn’t sit well with her and she wanted my opinion. Let me begin by stating that I’m well aware that not all subscribers to these eMail broadcasts prescribe to the belief that “tongues” are for today. The focus of this treatise is not to argue that point, one way or the other. Suffice it to say that I’m hoping we have all read (or WILL read) the Scriptures enough to recognize: (A) what “speaking in tongues” is, and (B) that many in The Body of Christ, across denominational lines, make claim that they have received this gift. In this eMinistry, I’ve heard from people of virtually all mainline denominations who’ve claimed to have received the gift of tongues, several out of concern that they would be excommunicated or disfellowshipped if they were ever found out. TONGUES IN THE BIBLE The gift of tongues was apparently important enough that God used this manifestation to “jump-start” the Church (Acts 2). Logicallyspeaking, why would He have stopped there? Fact is, the gift of tongues is mentioned after Pentecost as well. Once again, no logical reason why they should have ceased, humanly speaking. Jesus made only one recorded reference to speaking in tongues. In Mark 16:17, speaking of all those who would follow as His disciples, He said, “In my name you will cast out devils, you will speak with new tongues… .” That’s it? That’s ALL He had to say?! And we make such a BIG deal of the issue! He spoke much more of Sonship and Discipleship than He spoke of speaking in tongues. Strange how I rarely hear people argue about the “casting out devils” part. Is it because too few are doing that … even within the tongue-talking camps? Just a thought. I see no biblical evidence that the dunamis (from whence we get our word “dynamite”) power of the early apostles would have been withdrawn from the Church before the King returns. I personally cannot believe there’s anyone who can scripturally prove, without a doubt, that speaking in tongues is the evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Neither do I believe there’s anyone who can scripturally prove that this gift (or any other) has been eliminated from the Christian arsenal. I AM certain that BOTH those Christians would argue all day about the subject. The promise, we must remember, was not “you shall receive tongues when the Holy Ghost comes upon you.” It was “you shall receive POWER!” Not tongues of fire. Not rushing, mighty winds. POWER! Question: what miracles did the apostles do AFTER Pentecost that they hadn’t done BEFORE? They were already healing the sick and casting out devils prior to the Upper Room experience. Jesus said, “…you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth,” (Acts 1:8). Witnesses? In Greek, the word is martyr. In essence: “You shall receive power to lay your life down for the Kingdom’s sake; for the cause of Christ!” Did the power they received enable these simple, unlearned men to raise the dead, preach with convincing eloquence, endure torturous beatings, forsake everything and everyone in which they had ever previously taken comfort, and write anointed epistles, too? Absolutely. It changed them. Any other need for power, other than what is required for Kingdom-building, focuses our attention squarely on “self” and increases the danger of humanism raising its ugly head amidst the things of God. There’s already too much of that. As I’ve stated in the past, Christianity isn’t about US. SPIRIT OR FLESH? Back to tongue-talking, surely we know it can be faked. Let’s consider that. I had an unchurched neighbor who was mocking his Pentecostal wife one day and he sounded … well, quite legitimate! But if we’re going to appoint anyone to judge whose tongues are “of the flesh” and which are “of the Spirit,” why not go all the way and have those same appointed people whip out their Flesh-O-Meters and determine who is singing, preaching, or even tithing in the church out of carnality as well? Selah. Not all tongues could possibly be legitimate. That’s simply inconceivable. I’ve been exposed to enough foreign languages to know when I’ve heard “tongues” that had a distinct Spanish, German, African or American Indian flavor to them. I’ve heard those who were simply speaking a broken dialect of a second language they already possessed, having little to do with God’s miraculous gift; they were merely praying in this second “tongue” of theirs. Nothing wrong with that - I’m glad to see Christians pray at all, whenever. It just doesn’t “classify” as legitimate tongue-talking in most Pentecostal circles. Neither does the insertion of an occasional phrase in Spanish, etc. In deliverance ministry, demonic tongues may be heard on occasion which most Pentecostals would envy. But bear this in mind: one’s desire for more of God MUST be commended, never ridiculed or scorned, real tongues or not! Such things are too often used as a source of contention and division in the Church. I could tell some of the most incredible stories of people who spoke in tongues, were overheard, and understood, by someone nearby … and it ministered to them. To THEM, mind you … to the people who overheard. That’s terrific because this Kingdom is not about you and me. If we are sons of the house, our efforts should be geared toward building the house, tending to the house, filling the house, expanding the house, guarding the house. GIFT OF TONGUES IN CONTEXT Understanding Sonship in the Kingdom of God must be put within the context of Stewardship and Servanthood. This brings us to the reality that we are witnesses (martyrs; serving unto death) to the Gospel of the Kingdom of God, and not rulers. If it were all about US being made rulers, then the focus of Christianity is all about us and what WE get when if we sign-on. Do we get tongues? Great! But wait … if tongues edifies no one but ourselves, there’s no focus on making disciples, right? See, the gift of tongues, when legitimately manifested, is for the strengthening of one’s self (1 Cor 14:4-5,12). It rarely, but not always, does anything for anybody else, especially the way we see it being demonstrated in most cases today. Sadly, I’ve seen tongues become a measuring stick of one’s spirituality, creating a “have vs. have-not” ungodly caste system in the Church, inviting dissension into the ranks. Even frustrating and discouraging those who had not “received” the gift of tongues. So, we must ask ourselves, in our desire for the gift of tongues, what is our REAL motivation? If you were being attacked by a bear, would you prefer a rifle or the gift of tongues? Well, the gift of tongues is seemingly widespread in the Western Church, but the fact that our house is in such disarray reveals that we could use the manifested FRUITS of the Spirit much more than we need the GIFT of tongues right now. This is critical because Pentecostalism is currently the fastest-growing segment of Christianity in the Western Church and its leadership must be keen to this lack of fruit. Jesus said, “By their fruits you will know them,” (Mat 7:16-20). Not “by their tongues.” How do I know you’re a Christian? Because you SAY so? With that logic, if you say you’re a book because you stand in a library, should I believe you? How do you know I’m a Christian? You don’t. Saints, we will be known by our fruit. Go ahead, judge me. Some gasp, “But we’re not SUPPOSED to judge!” (There we go with the rule-keeping again!) Yes, I know… Scripture says, “Do not judge, or you, too, will be judged… .” But the verse continues, “… for in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”In other words, if you evaluate my lifestyle and perceive me to be evil, and even bring up the issue to others, you should only dare to do so (A) for my benefit; out of love for me, and (B) if you are prepared to undergo the same scrutiny of your own life. Fact is, Scripture exhorts us repeatedly to judge people and things (1 Cor 5:9; 2 Cor 11:15; Phil 3:2; 1 Jn 4:1), and instructs us to “test everything” (1 Th 5:21). Enough about that. Point is, you’ll know I’m a Christian when I exhibit the fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22. Do I love unconditionally? Am I joyful, or does my happiness rise and fall with my circumstances? Do I exhibit peace in the midst of strife? Am I patient? Kind? Good to others? Filled with faith in God? Gentle, practicing self-control? Personally, I wish we in the Church would speak in tongues all day long. This might eliminate some of the back-stabbing, murmuring, criticism and gossip that that is generated from that tiny part of our anatomy. It would be especially useful in the car before and after church meetings, agreed? (That was today’s attempt at humor.) THEY”LL KNOW WE’RE CHRISTIANS BY OUR…TONGUES? One final thought: Early on, I was taught that there is a natural example of everything that takes place in the spiritual. This as proven to be true time and time again. Well, since we are soldiers in the Lord’s army, engaged in a spiritual war (Eph 6), wouldn’t it be wise to enlist a “secret code” language for use in prayer, in case the enemy was listening? After all, we’re snared by the words of our mouths (Prov 6:2). Ridiculous? Tell it to the U.S. Marines! In World War II, Navajo “code talkers” took part in every assault the Marines conducted in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945. They served in all six Marine divisions, Marine Raider battalions and Marine parachute units, transmitting messages by telephone and radio in their native language; a code the Japanese never broke. By the way, the idea to use Navajo for secure communications came from a man named Philip Johnston, son of a Christian missionary to the Navajos and one of the few non-Navajos who spoke the language fluently. As a result of his efforts, the Marines recruited 200 Navajos which, throughout the war were praised for their skill, speed and accuracy. Major Howard Connor declared, “Were it not for the Navajos, the Marines would never have taken Iwo Jima.” Connor had six Navajo code talkers working around the clock during the first two days of the battle. Those six sent and received over 800 messages, all without error. The Japanese, skilled code breakers, were baffled by the Navajo language. Their chief of intelligence later said that while they were able to decipher the codes used by the U.S. Army and Army Air Corps, they never cracked the code used by the Marines. Something to consider? Following are some things Jesus had to say regarding Sonship and Discipleship. Notice, “speaking in tongues” is nowhere to be found. Let us stress what the Lord stressed and eliminate the stress over the “tongues” issue. READ ‘EM AND REAP! Mat 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God” Mat 5:44,45 “But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in Heaven; for he makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” Mat 13:38 “…the field is the world, and the good seed means the sons of the Kingdom; the weeds are the sons of the evil one…” Mat 28:19-20 “Therefore, go, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I commanded you. Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Joh 8:31 “If you remain in My Word, then you are truly My disciples. Joh 13:35 “By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” Joh 15:8 “In this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit; and so you will be My disciples.” Need pastoral counseling and prayer? Patio Awnings Add to Your Outdoor Fun

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

By Terry Price Are you looking for a real good patio cover design? You can rest assured, if your architect designed the patio, it is probably custom-made and of good quality. Try to match the patio cover with the house layout and usage. It depends on what you use your patio for, as you could use it as a utility room to place a grill, a table and some chairs, or use it for entertaining purposes. You may also use it for a hobby or recreation area, or an all-weather living area for your family pet. There are tons of designs, ranging from patio awnings with partial cover or patio umbrellas for limited area cover. There are aluminum or wood patio covers to protect against rain or sun. If you decide on the wood or aluminum cover, make sure it’s of the highest quality material, as well as being fashionable and functional. Most patio awnings are maintenance-free and are of the highest quality, and will not twist, warp, decay or rot. If you live in the area where there’s a lot of sunlight, there are solar-designed patio covers that offer shade, and produce clean and environmentally-friendly electricity. Selecting the best patio cover design will depend on the shape of your structure and your dcor. Try covering one half of your deck with a lattice design and the other portion with a solid roof. This will give you an area that is still exposed to light on one side and complete shade on the other. Also, have a look at a pergola structure as this can create a relaxing outdoor atmosphere. It has angled slats to give you an airy feeling and at the same time will block out sun and give you great shade. Regardless of what type of patio umbrellas or patio awnings you choose, remember to keep functionality in mind. Wedding Transportation: Getting Everyone Where They Need to be - on Time!

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Amy Spade One of the last things a couple will think about when planning their wedding is how to get everyone there and back. But this is a special day, so you dont want to be piling everyone into a station wagon to get to the church on timeunless its a really big station wagon. Getting to the vows The bridal party as well as the couple themselves may want to invest in a limousine to transport them from the salon or hotel to the church or chapel. Not only does this free up everyone to indulge in a little champagne, but it also takes the stress out of who is driving, if they show up on time, making sure that everyone can fit into the car without wrinkling the dresses or tuxedos too much, etc. One of the best ways to handle this is to have the bridal party meet at the hotel the morning of the wedding. This way, the bride and her bridesmaids can take the limo to the salon while the men can go out for golf or breakfast. After they are done, they can change and shower at the hotel and then have the limo take them to the church. After the beauty treatments are done, the women can return to the hotel to change into their dresses and then take the limo that has returned by now to the church as well. This way, the groom and the bride dont see each other, but everyone rides to the wedding in style. Leaving for the reception After the vows, the bride and the groom will normally ride off in a limo for pictures or to go to the reception early to freshen up. If the bridal party has another limo, then they can all ride together; if not, a few people can drive. At this point, a lot of the pictures will have been taken, so it wont be as important to have the least amount of wrinkles in the outfits. And after the reception, the bride and the groom may choose to hire transportation between the reception and the hotel. This is a costly option, but if the two are far apart, its also wise. When you have guests from out of town, this may work out well as they may not know their way around. If you do plan on offering transport, let guests know in the invitation. Lucky! Lucky! Lucky! Bride and Groom!

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Vlady Peters Our forefathers (and mothers) were a fearful bunch. They worried that when it started to rain, it might never stop. And worried again that when the rain stopped, it might not start again. Similarly, while they lived in daily fear that they might become a snack for some marauding animal, they worried even more if the animal decamped and they lost their own supply of food. In such a world of fear and worry, its no wonder that people were very much on the lookout for ways to avert disaster or promote good luck through all sorts of rituals. In particular, the wedding is full of them. One of the stranger of these customs of good luck, is that surrounding the story of the Lucky Chimney Sweep. In themselves, chimney sweeps werent particularly lucky. Some of them never survived their apprenticeship as six year old chimney sweeps. And as older chimney sweeps, so full of dust and grime that no amount of washing was ever likely to eradicate it, it is not to be supposed that they were societys darlings. Ladies in their silks and satins werent likely to say to themselves, I really must get an introduction to that irresistible chimney sweep. Im sure that underneath all that soot lives a veritable prince. The more likely scenario was that the lady would pick up her voluminous skirts and run for her life, knowing just how expensive those skirts were, and how onerous the washing would be if they ever came in contact with that walking duster. So why the Lucky Chimney Sweep? Well, the stories are many and varied. But the bottom line is that a chimney sweep, sometime in the past, was lucky enough to save a prince from some severe physical distress. In his gratitude the prince rewarded the chimney sweep with enough gold pieces to make it possible for him to realise his dream. His dream was to make his sweet heart his bride. At this stage she was vacillating between a poor chimney sweep with personality, and a tradesman without personality but with a respectable bank account. From then on it was circulated that a bride who glimpsed a chimney sweep on her way to the church, was bound to be lucky in love and in life. Incidentally, the kissing of a chimney sweep in very much a twentieth century thing. No self-respecting female could have ever wished to get any closer to a chimney sweep then waving at him from across the opposite side of the street. Someone Else

Thursday, November 22nd, 2007

By Nan S. Russell “I’m sorry, but I have to vent. It was a horrible day at work,” began my friend on our monthly catch-up call. “We’ve all been there,” I offered. “Yeah, but not like this.” As a substitute instructional aid, she’d been asked to assist teachers on a field trip for 275 fifth graders to celebrate the successful completion of a testing week. Her bus was the last unloaded and by the time she entered the skating rink, it was chaos. Teachers were standing, arms crossed, griping that no one from the administration was there to organize the event; no one told them what was suppose to happen; and no one had alerted the rink to their coming. While all legitimate concerns, being angry, frustrated and absorbed in their own plight meant no one was dealing with scores of eleven-year-olds rushing to grab skates, ripping open snacks, pushing to get sodas and throwing trash on the floor. “I was utterly horrified,” my friend told me. After watching for several minutes, she decided to recruit a teacher and the two of them began organizing students and assigning tasks to teachers. She did what people who are winning at working do. They act. In twenty years in management, I’ve seen people waiting, watching and hoping someone else would step up, take ownership and make things happen. I’ve seen people stuck in blame-gear while others are doing the work and solving the problems. And I’ve seen people hesitating while others are committing. No surprise these were the same people complaining in my office when others received bigger increases, better assignments, or more interesting projects. You see, people who are winning at working become the someone else that others are waiting for. They step up and do something. They know when to act, and they feel better about themselves when they do. That’s because action feels better than inaction and commitment feels better than non-commitment. Both build your self-esteem. So, here’s my bottom-line: you can’t be winning at working if you’re waiting for someone else to be the someone you could be. In my way of thinking, winning at working means you commit to offering the best you there is. Sometimes that means you have to dig a little deeper for your courage or push yourself outside your comfort zone. Sometimes it means you have to handle 275 out of control children when you’re the lowest ranking person around. But it’s like Shakespeare said, “Nothing comes from doing nothing.” (c) 2005 Nan S. Dieting: Will it Work or Fail for Weight Loss?

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Craig Ballantyne If you try and follow a strict, low-calorie diet, you are going to fail. That’s about as easy as quitting smoking cold turkey. Its just not going to happen. But if you get professional advice, learn how to shop, plan, and prepare healthy (and still tasty) meals, while eating for energy, not out of boredom, then you can finally use a diet to be successful. First, lets take a look at eating for energy, rather than out of boredom. Eating for energy means choosing foods that don’t slow you down. So make note of how you feel after eating certain meals. Does fast fat make you sluggish, tired, and bloated? If so, why on earth would you continue to eat it? Cut that out and replace the fast food with protein and fresh fruit. Re-awaken your taste buds with fresh fruit, while at the same time increasing your energy levels and cutting your appetite (thanks to the fiber in fruit). You are probably used to sugary, salty snacks, so when you eat good fruit, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how good real food can taste. And it’s so simple to plan and prepare. Set aside 2 hours on the weekend to make your shopping list, go to the store, and then come home and prepare your fruits and vegetables for the week. Grill a batch of chicken breasts to store in the fridge and freezer, and you’re set for many of your meals for the week. In addition, add almonds and other raw nuts to your lunch bag and you’ll have an appetite-fighting snack available at any time. You can eat well and lose fat at the same time, while boosting your energy and metabolism. Stick to whole, natural foods in your diet and you’ll succeed. Spring-time Fishing

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Chris Curley In North America, Bass Fishing is the pursuit of the fish known primarily as Largemouth, Smallmouth and Rock Bass. But if you ask most American anglers, there looking for those Largemouth bulls (or pigs) depending on where youre from. After the winter solstice the weather begins to improve which means the prime fishing season is right around the corner. During Jan and Feb, the fish are still in winter patterns (establishing patterns at your favorite hole, is dependant upon going out and sight fishing during the late winter period). If you get a series of 60-70 degree days during these months, fish will go shallow in a hurry, they will move into a pre-spawning pattern. Generally speaking, if you see fish around standing timber or docks during these warm periods, then your chance of catching fish in those types of areas around the lake or stream during spring are pretty much the same. During these periods, when the water is at the higher levels, bass love to hang out between shallow brush and the edge of sharp drop-offs. Just remember, the water is cold, so slow your roll if youre looking for a lunker. During spring fishing, most top water poppers work well. Also, 3-4 inch soft-plastic minnows rigged Carolina or Texas style, which ever you prefer, except without a weight and with a barrel swivel on the end of the leader so your line doesnt get all twisted up. You can skip this lure across the top of the water to get it up under tree limbs to really get in next to the trunks and then dog walk it back out through spawning nests. Be ready, because big bass are protecting theyre nests and they will attack, without prejudice. These techniques work well on Lake Monroe, IN., which I happen to be lucky enough to have as my back yard. Finding the combination for your lake or fishin hole should be your number one priority during the early fishing season. Fish will tend to be attracted to the same lures in the fall that they were during spring, so get used to workin what works. Sometimes you can get a spinner or a buzz bait to draw out larger bass waiting in ambush in the thickets (sunken brush, weeds and standing timber). Drag the lure along the outer-edge of these areas with a yo-yo retrieve or, jig n pig it. The rising and dropping motion, along with the buzz and vibration of the bait is what triggers Largemouth to strike, even when there not hungry. My favorite lure is the 2 inch, lipped, two treble-hook, balsa or plastic minnow with a reflective pattern or a realistic pattern. If you can get it to pop like a popper, it can be very deadly in the spring, especially on small ponds and channel coves along the edge of weed-beds and under overhanging trees. And if youre real good, you might be able to skip it like the soft minnow. As stated before, almost anything that pops the top of the water can be very useful throughout spring-time. The popping and splashing resembles a dying fish and the noises associated with other fish feeding on it. All of these actions attract fish of all sizes, makes them hungry and then they strike.Pop the lure and let it sit until the rings die out and then do it again. Generally the strike will happen right before the next pop. Be sure to keep your eye on the lure, cause when that fish hits, especially Largemouth, if you dont set the hook soon enough (meaning, the second your lure disappears) the fish will spit it out. Panfish will usually get hooked as soon as they bite. Spinners can also be used to slow-roll through deep channels to locate that lurkin lunker or to establish patterns in the deeper areas along the banks. Just work the bottom and see what happens. However, spinners usually dont work to well during spring. A temperature gauge is a handy tool to have year round to establish retrieval speeds. Remember cold water tends to slow the fish down and warmer water will cause the fish to be more active. So practicing different speeds in different temperatures is a useful way to locate more fish. Remember, when youre on the lake, other people are out there too! Help to take care of our lakes, rivers, and other waterways so that others may enjoy these areas for years to come. Follow your state and local laws regarding fishing and boating practices in your area. Heres some hints on fishing etiquette: Don’t litter, take along a trash bag or other receptacle for collecting your trash. Make sure that you use the correct type of bait and fishing gear permitted in that area. There may also be limits on the number, size, and kind of fish that you can keep. Check with your destination ahead of time to see what the local regulations allow. If you use a boat or watercraft when fishing, check to see what kinds of watercraft are allowed and what the registration requirements are. Pay attention to local procedures and cautions for cleaning your watercraft after you leave the water so that you don’t encourage the spread of non-native species to the next body of water that you visit. Don’t fish in areas where it is not permitted. These areas have been declared “off limits” for a reason. It may not be a good idea to find out why. Just remember, wherever you fish, make sure you have a good time and be safe. Chris Curley Lives in Nashville, IN. with his dog Piranha. The Protection Against Solar UV Rays is Not a Fairy Tale!

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By Claudia Budu Ph.D. Solar UV radiation (UVA and UVB) produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), within both dermal and epidermal cells. The reactive oxygen resulted from a dissociation of molecular oxygen in atomic oxygen has high affinity for different organic molecules, increasing their potential for oxidation, which can affect proteins structure, causes local inflammation and initiates several unfavorable skin cell reactions. Both layers of the skin, epidermis (the upper layer) and dermis (the lower layer) are affected by UV rays. UVB radiation easily penetrates the epidermis and stimulates melanocytes, one of the cells types on the epidermis to produce a brownish pigment called melanin. Melanin protects the skin by absorbing and scattering ultraviolet rays. UVB rays are shorter and are responsible for the sunburns we feel when our skin is unprotected. UVA goes deeper into the skin and cause major changes in the dermis. The collagenous constituents of dermis, responsible for the skins strength, show marked alterations in their composition. This radiation is responsible for the acceleration of the skin aging process by breaking down the collagen and elastin tissues. UVA rays cause skin tanning, age spots, and wrinkling of the skin, as well as contribute to the development of skin cancer. Sunscreen agents with SPF of 15 or greater are considered sun blocks because they may absorb more than 92% of UVB radiation. Currently, there is no standard method to assess sunscreen agents for UVA protection. Usually, it is recommended to use creams, lotions and mineral make-up with sunscreen capabilities to protect your skin against UVB radiation. However, sun UVB blockers constituents, such as the derivatives of cinnamon (cinnamic aldehyde, cinnamic oil, octyl methoxycinnamate), PABA ( para- aminobezoic acids) and esters or salicylates (octyl salicylates , triethanolamine salicylate) can cause allergic reactions, irritation and might photosensitizes your skin. Titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide reflect radiation and reduce the chance of an allergic skin reaction. However, the researches have been shown that microscopic particles of titanium dioxide, also called nano-particles, may increase the formation of free-radicals (reactive oxygen species) onto the skin. Topical antioxidants can be effective in protecting against and reversing photodamage of the skin. Researches have been shown that topical vitamin C and E, as well as the mineral selenium can protect against sunburn, suntan and skin cancer. Only certain forms of these antioxidants are stable and active after absorption onto the skin. For example, vitamin C must be non-esterified and has to be acidic, vitamin E must be non-esterified and has to be the isomer, D-alpha tocopherol. Selenium is active only when applied topically as L-selenomethionine. It was also shown that topical application is several times more effective than oral administration of these antioxidants. Antioxidants found naturally in their milieu, such as herbal extracts or oils are most likely more active than the same isolated antioxidants. For example by looking for vitamin C you may find it in active form and substantial quantities in Rosehip seed extract or oil. Further Sea Buckthorn oil is extremely rich in carotenoids, vitamin E and selenium. It has been already shown the important role of carotenoids in prevention and treatment of different cancer types due to their antioxidant capabilities. There is no wonder that the Russian cosmonauts have been using Sea Buckthorn base creams to protect themselves against cosmic radiation. Grape seed extract is rich in flavonoids and phytochemicals that have antioxidant properties, which some consider are even greater than vitamin C and vitamin E. The most valuable flavonoids in grape seed extract are proanthocyanidins, commonly called PCOs. The experts compare the therapeutic qualities of grape seed extract with those of Pycnogenol, a very powerful and expensive antioxidant used as an alternative treatment for heart and cancer disease. In conclusion, be careful when select your sun blocker creams, lotions and make-up. They might not be appropriate for your skin type and they can trigger skin damage. For highly UV protection, I recommend the usage of skin care products based on complex combination of antioxidants. Not all antioxidants act in the same way to protect your skin. The richer environment in antioxidants, the greater protection against free radicals (ROS) is expected. buy tramadol hcl buy online ultram canada online order pharmacy ultram online pharmacy tramadol 24 hours
